The New York Times today had an article about bootleg shirts adding to fan frenzy about the Memphis Grizzlies NBA team. Honestly I think it is a good idea. So many bands that allowed bootleg recordings actually boosted their sales of recording, and I think this is an analogous situation. Let a little creativity and expression go crazy and you’ll end up with more fans and with more fans you will sell more official merchandise. Go Grizzlies!
To Quote the Times: As John Pugliese, the Grizzlies’ vice president for marketing, communications and broadcast, put it: “When you have fans interacting with your brand — not just purchasing tickets or watching you on TV, but truly taking their time and effort to create artwork, put it on a blank shirt and wear that T-shirt — that type of engagement is what we’re all striving for.”
