Cautionary Tale: Be Careful AND Keep Up Your Insurance

My pal Jon just had a fire at his shop Pop Tops this past weekend.

The cause is still being investigated, but it appears to have started while nobody was there in the screen room.

A few good things:

– Nobody was hurt, no firefighters or employees

– Sprinklers kept the fire from spreading

– There was a fire alarm that worked perfectly and the firefighters arrived quickly

– The firefighters did a great job and put out the fire without creating too much havoc of their own

– They had good insurance that should get them whole again. It even covered (as it should) lots of their customer’s goods that got ruined.

The Bad:

– Lots of smoke damage, which really ruins things.

– They were already busy so they have to deal with the fire damage, deal with insurance company, get all their work done by subcontracting it, and get rebuilt. A daunting task.

Area screenprinters and embroiderers have offered to help them out. It is nice to see the community come together like that. Jon is  a good guy and I’m sure would do the same for any of us.

Make sure your insurance is up to date out there. Preliminary indications are that a motor malfunctioned on a piece of equipment, and that could happen to any of us.

  1. Hoping Jon and his family will come back stronger from this. Hurts looking at the photos. Fires suck. My uncle and grandfather both had massive fires that destroyed their buildings. Even with good insurance they like to not pay people and find loopholes when a lot money is involved.
