Gildan has decided to close their garment dyeing facility in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Gildan bought the plant from Comfort Colors in 2015. It will close now as of February 28th, 2018 and 90 workers there will lose their jobs.
The facility originally was opened in 1995 in a cavernous former armaments factory by the then Comfort Colors owner Barry T. Chouinard.
Soon after buying Comfort Colors in 2015 Gildan closed the Comfort Colors Vermont dyeing facility with 60 workers losing their jobs.
Dyeing Comfort Colors has been moving to Honduras and all the dyeing will now be consolidated there according to Gildan spokesperson Garry Bell.
There was no comment from my friend Barry Chouinard on the closing, as he sadly died in November of 2016.
In other Gildan news, they are closing the Alstyle (Gildan purchased Alstyle in early 2016) distribution center and consolidating it into the facility in CA where they currently ship American Apparel (which Gildan purchased in early 2017.) Approximately 85 workers are to be made redundant (fancy British term for laying somebody off) although Gildan reports approximately 30% of them are relocating to the new facility.
